       Sus origenes en el cine se situan dentro de la tarea de operador de camara y, despues, ayudante de direccion. Su carrera como director comienza realmente en 1936. Lesley Selander es uno de los grandes especialistas del western, con mas de cien peliculas a sus espaldas. Decir “uno de los grandes especialistas” no es lo mismo que decir “uno de los grandes nombres” y, en efecto, la trayectoria de Selander, en lo que a la calidad de sus peliculas se refiere, es irregular. Lo que, sin embargo, sorprende es que la valoracion media de sus westerns no es baja, lo que indica que el director poseia un especial instinto para el genero, que pone de manifiesto con una plastica mas que correcta y un buen manejo del tiempo de la narracion. Inabarcable por su extension, es dificil senalar los filmes que destacan en tan amplia muestra, pero si me veo en la obligacion de citar alguno, no dudaria en elegir las peliculas que hizo para Allied Artists a finales de los anos 40 y principios de los 50, y algunas otras de las ultimas que realizo, como Dakota Lil o The Broken Star.

       Nacido en Nueva York. Ayudante de direccion desde 1932 y director de mas de cien peliculas desde 1937, primero para Republic hasta 1944, mas tarde para Columbia hasta 1948, y despues hasta 1956 para Universal. A medida que pasaba de una productora a otra los presupuestos de sus peliculas iban siendo mas holgados, por lo que no es de extranar que su ultimo western, que es tambien su ultima pelicula, El gran Jack, sea la de presupuesto mas amplio y, dicho sea de paso, la mejor. Sherman es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los grandes especialistas del western. Una ojeada a su filmografia hace innecesarias otras explicaciones; entre 1937 y 1943 trabaja a un ritmo frenetico para satisfacer las necesidades de algunas de las estrellas del genero, destacando, en particular, su dedicacion a la serie The Three Mes quiteers. A partir de 1946 realiza sus obras mas personales, que, sin pasar de discretas, cumplen sobradamente su cometido.

       Louis Friedlander, o Lew Landers, es un caso notable de fecundidad filmica. Mas de 150 peliculas lo contemplan entre 1934 y 1962, ano de su muerte.
       Dirigio dramas, peliculas de aventuras, comedias, peliculas belicas y de ciencia-ficcion, de ambiente criminal y, por supuesto, westerns. Un buen punado de ellos, sobre todo filmes de serie y un par de seriales. Estamos ante un director competente que hizo todo lo que se podia hacer con el material que se ponia en sus manos. Son justamente famosas El cuervo (The Raven, 1935), con Boris Karloff, basada en el relato de Edgar Allan Poe, Blind Alibi (1938), de ambiente opresivo, y el western Bad Lands, donde hace gala de un uso preciso de los primeros planos. Estas dos ultimas peliculas son productos RKO, productora para la que Friedlander trabajo extensamente, como, por otra parte, para Universal, Columbia, Republic o PRC.

       Rex Lease, Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown, Bob Steele, entre otros heroes del western, forman parte de la nomina de actores a los que dirigio Elmer Clifton en algunas de las peliculas de sus series respectivas. Una obra abundante la de este director- guionista-actor, dominada por westerns y peliculas dramaticas, tanto mudas como sonoras. Cuando estaba dirigiendo No Wanted, 1949, cayo enfermo, siendo reemplazado por la actriz de la pelicula, Ida Lupino, quien desde entonces le tomo gusto a eso de dirigir peliculas. La ultima de Clifton, The Silver Bandit, es postuma porque el director iba a morir, precisamente, en el ano 1949.

    1915-2002
       En sus inicios profesionales, a mediados de los anos 30, Witney hizo un poco de todo: fue montador, ayudante de direccion e, incluso, guionista, pero a partir de 1937 se dedico a la realizacion, convirtiendose en uno de los directores prolificos de Hollywood, en este caso para la productora Republic. En sus primeros anos como realizador, se especializo en seriales realizados en colaboracion, en particular con John English. La division del trabajo era sencilla: este rodaba las escenas de dialogo y los interiores, y Witney las escenas de accion. De este modo, fue adquiriendo justa fama como director de peliculas de accion, con grandes peleas y largas cabalgadas. Aunque la parte mas extensa de su filmografia la ocupan los westerns, es justo reconocer su labor en otros filmes de accion como Aventuras del capitan Maravillas (Adventures of Captain Marvel, 1941), se rial realizado con el ya citado John English. Como al gunos otros de sus companeros, sirvio extensamente a estrellas del western, en este caso Roy Rogers y Rex Allen. En sus peliculas hay de todo, pero no seria malo revisarlas con alguna atencion porque encontraremos en ellas no pocos detalles interesantes de personal estilo cinematografico.

    1894-1965
       Entre 1917 y 1955 trabajo en infinidad de filmes de diversos generos, especialmente westerns, con rapidez y economia. Fue de todo: especialista, actor, productor, guionista, ayudante de direccion y director. Se recuerda su trabajo de realizacion, a comienzos de los 30, en cuatro peliculas Warner Bros protagonizadas por un joven John Wayne. Hizo, ademas, otras cuatro peliculas con el cowboy-cantante Gene Autry, otras tantas de la serie “The Three Meskiteers” con el trio Robert Livingston, Ray Corrigan y Max Terhune, y dos seriales, uno en colaboracion con Ray Taylor, y el otro con Sam Nelson. Fueron, en total, 26 films, rodados entre 1920 y 1947. Mas tarde, volvio a ser ayudante de direccion y supervisor de produccion de peliculas de serie B, particularmente con el realizador W. Lee Wilder.

    1912-2002
       Andre De Toth hizo siempre poco ruido pero, paso a paso, fue construyendo una obra tan modesta como estimable. Hungaro de nacimiento, despues de licenciarse en leyes entra en el mundo del teatro, en su pais, y de alli al cine, donde trabaja como guionista, ayudante de direccion, montador y, esporadicamente, actor, hasta dirigir cinco peliculas, inmediatamente antes del estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. De Hungria salta a Inglaterra, contratado por el emigrado hungaro Alexander Korda. Es en Inglaterra donde cambia su nombre verdadero, Toth Endre, por el de Andre De Toth. En los Estados Unidos, adonde se traslada poco despues, rodo mas de treinta filmes a partir de 1943, de los que nada menos que once son westerns. Tratandose de un hombre que viene de Centroeuropa, no se le puede pedir mayor sensibilidad a la hora de abordar la tematica clasica de este genero, que contribuyo a ennoblecer. Peliculas como La mujer de fuego y Pacto de honor abren la puerta a la mayoria de edad del genero, que De Toth ayudo a renovar, aunque no hay que olvidar su contribucion a otros generos como el de terror (Los crimenes del museo de cera, House of Wax, 1953) o el negro (Aguas turbias, Dark Waters, 1944).

       Hermano menor de Henry King y, a la larga, mucho menos relevante que el, nacio tambien en Chris tianburg. Empieza a dirigir en 1921. A comienzos del sonoro se ocupa de las versiones espanolas de peliculas de la Fox, con un tal Luis Alonso, que despues seria famoso con el nombre de Gilbert Roland. De los 38 westerns que se le acreditan, 21 son mudos. En la actualidad, los filmes de Louis King, que ceso en su actividad de cineasta en 1959 despues de algunas realizaciones para television, apenas se ven, ni en la pantalla grande ni en la pequena.

       Nacido en Jersey City, New Jersey, inicialmente trabaja como ayudante de fotografia y de direccion, pero en 1932 lo encontramos ya dirigiendo su primera pelicula, The Death Kiss, un producto tipico de cine de misterio, realizado para Tiffany, precursor de al menos otra decena de filmes de caracteristicas similares, todos ellos igualmente honestos, dirigidos por Marin. Este genero (o subgenero, si se quiere) y el western seran los que mejor se adapten a la personalidad del realizador, habil en la creacion de ambientes, solido en el desarrollo dramatico de sus filmes y, en resumen, honrado profesional, particularmente interesante en el mundo del western, en el que consigue peliculas llenas de vigor narrativo, muy por encima de la media de la epoca. Especialmente atractivos son sus filmes con el actor Randolph Scott, rodados entre 1949 y 1951, primero para 20th Century-Fox y luego para Warner Bros. El mas destacado de todos ellos es, sin duda, Colt 45.

       Este clasico de Hollywood, prolifico y polifacetico, di rigio casi 300 filmes, repartidos equitativamente en tre mudo y sonoro. Es tan dificil encontrar una pelicula brillante dirigida por el como encontrar otra que sea deleznable. Abarca todos los generos y to das las tendencias. Apreciado por su rapidez y economia, Mister “Una toma”, como se le conocia, se ocupo, in evitablemente, del western, en el que construyo una obra breve, tal vez gris, pero mas interesante de lo que los titulos, los actores y el supuesto alcance de los filmes podria hacer suponer, si excluimos de esta obra ciertas rarezas crepusculares que le llevaron a asociar a algunos de los mas celebres bandidos de la mitologia del salvaje oeste con los monstruos que lanzo a la fama cinematografica la Universal.
